Oh, but no...let the googlebombing begin
Dear Winifred,
Have you ever noticed that if you google the word "jew", that the first link is to an antisemitic site? What can we, as rational people, do to fix that?
Signed,
Disturbed
Dear Disturbed,
On this, the first day of Passover, I agree that something must be done. Ergo, with a little help from Sisyphus, (
jmhm), let's googlebomb, shall we?
I think googlebombing can very easily get played out, but Crooked Timber has one I can definitely get behind.
Apparently the first hit for the word jew on Google is an antisemitic hate site. If you think its not a good idea for the first hit for the word jew on Google to be an antisemitic hate site, you might want to post the word jew on your blog with a link to the Wikipedia entry on the word jew.
Needless to say, people both in and outside the jewish community have lots of different ideas about what being jewish means, who is best qualified to define what a jew is, what the implications of judaism are politically, for both jews and non-jews, and how being jewish affects ones relationship to the non jewish cultures in which most of the worlds jews live.
Nonetheless, I do believe that we can agree that it sucks mightily to allow people who have gone to the trouble of setting up a website to spread hatred of jews provide the most influential definition on the worldwide web of what it means to be jewish.
On the occasion of the jewish high holy days, I think it would be nice if we got this straightened out, on behalf of the jewish people who are celebrating now, as well as the jewish people who have celebrated in the past.
Dig it. jews, jews, jews, just as far as the eye can see, doing that Seder thing.
So, happy holy days, whether you're jewish or not.
